Jump Crypto is the crypto arm of the famous TradFi investment and research company, Jump Trading. Based in Chicago, Illinois, US, Jump Trading has been operating since 1999 and has over $300M in assets under management (AUM). Its portfolio consists of ETFs, stocks, and common traditional assets, with its top holdings being ETFs tied to the S&P 500, one of the three most commonly known stock indexes in the United States of America.

The company created Jump Crypto as a crypto division in 2015, and since then it has become one of the most impactful contributors in the crypto space. Jump Crypto consists of builders, developers, and traders in the crypto space, with a focus on creating and supporting innovation to revolutionise the Web3 and Blockchain space.

The four main products Jump Crypto has created as a company, are Firedancer, thePit, Cyclone, and Silo.

Firedancer

Firedancer is a Solana validator client that Jump Crypto is developing. This client is planned to be the second biggest client software for validators, following the Solana Labs validator client.

Anatoly Yakovenko, the founder of Solana, has already endorsed this client software. There are only two existing validator clients: Solana Labs and Jito Client Software. With more client software available, the chances of outages in Solana will lessen, as validators have more backup software if one experiences an outage or errors.

Cyclone

Cyclone was created to help innovations leveraging the zero-knowledge proof system by accelerating the components needed to implement it. Developers are open to using the open-source resources provided by Cyclone to help leverage their blockchain and Web3 applications or protocols.

The team is conducting two main studies to help improve the quality of Zero Knowledge technology. The first one is CycloneMSM, a technology that leverages Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) to accelerate multi-scalar multiplication (MSM) processes. This is crucial in cryptographic computations, particularly in blockchain applications, as it enhances the speed and efficiency of these operations.

The second is CycloneNTT, an architecture designed to handle large datasets using Number Theoretic Transform (NTT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods on FPGA platforms. It enables quasi-streaming of data, which optimizes the processing of large data sets, crucial for high-performance computing tasks such as cryptographic algorithms and signal processing.

Silo

Silo is Jump’s product that focuses on innovating and creating custody solutions for existing and new businesses in the crypto space. This product was created to help maximise Jump Crypto’s custody solution in the crypto market.

The main solution that has been published publicly by Jump Crypto through Silo is the cross-chain solution, which helps enable communication and custody from various blockchains.

Jump Crypto Investment in the Crypto Space

Jump Crypto acts as an investment company and venture capitalist in the crypto space. Its crypto portfolio is worth more than $8B, and its venture portfolio includes 93 Web3 projects, with an average investment of $1 to $3M per funding.

Most of its funding goes to crypto projects and companies that are focused on Payment Solutions, which makes sense since it has its custody solution called Silo that could support these projects.

Its biggest investment remains in the Terra Blockchain, which was allegedly used to pump and dump the price of its token before its collapse. However, they are still well invested in it after the rebranding which could deem the rumour of only pump and dump transactions to be false.

Dropstab

The biggest crypto coins in their portfolio are Solana (SOL), Aptos (APT), Injective (INJ), and Sui Network (SUI). Previously, it had ETH on its portfolio as well. However, it has dropped ETH from its portfolio with the unstaking of more than $300M in ETH.

Current State of Jump Crypto

According to a recent report, Jump Crypto is unstacking more than $400M of ETH. Arkham Intelligence, a blockchain analytics company responsible for publishing anomalies on the blockchain, captured this data.

It’s been discovered that Jump Crypto has moved some cryptocurrencies into different exchanges, including Binance, OKX, Coinbase, Bybit, and Gate.io. The transfers include 120,000 staked ETH tokens, worth around $314.8M, moved to exchanges starting July 24.

Data shows $410M of ETH unstacked, with $191M entering exchanges. Jump Crypto still holds $125.8M in staked ETH and has moved other assets like USDC, USDT, and UNI. Since July 25, Jump redeemed $341M wstETH, unstacked $274M from Lido Finance, and deposited $231M ETH to exchanges, holding around $706M in crypto.

This has stirred narratives that Jump Crypto is looking to exit the crypto market, as most of these staked ETH are spread around leading Ethereum projects. The transactions are being blamed as one of the causes of the selling pressure currently impacting most altcoin prices. However, there is a rumour that these ETHs will be converted to SOL to help increase Solana's dominance in the crypto space.

Ties with Terraform Labs

As mentioned before, Jump Trading's biggest investment is the Terra Blockchain project, created by Terraform Labs. However, the involvement with Terraform Labs and its Terra (LUNA) project is more than just an investment, especially in the last trial of Terraform Labs and Do Kwon, the founder of TerraFrom Labs.

The relationship between Do Kwon and Jump Crypto's president, Kanav Kariya, was notably tight. Jump Trading, known for its high-frequency trading operations, played a significant role in providing liquidity for UST and Luna.

This partnership, initiated in early 2020, was kept confidential. Jump received lucrative Luna call options as the project gained traction. Communications between Kanav and Kwon revealed a preference for using Signal for its disappearing chat feature, purportedly for compliance reasons, though it appears this feature was not utilised.

Jump’s support was crucial during UST's critical moments, particularly when it fell below $1 in May 2021. Jump's co-founder Bill DiSomma authorised significant financial risk to defend UST’s peg, an action deemed essential for Jump's credibility in the crypto sphere.

Despite Terraform Labs' internal recognition of Jump's pivotal role, public communications downplayed this, instead emphasising UST’s algorithmic resilience. This omission was highlighted by the SEC as a material factor constituting securities fraud, a stance supported by the jury.

While Jump and its executives faced scrutiny, they have not been formally accused of wrongdoing. Both Kariya and DiSomma invoked the Fifth Amendment during SEC depositions.

CFTC’s Probe on Jump Crypto

The aftermath of Jump Crypto's involvement with Terraform was not without consequences. In June 2024, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CTFC) started investigating Jump Trading for its involvement in the crypto space. However, the investigation seems to be insufficient evidence of wrongdoing, as the company is not currently guilty of anything.

Both parties involved in this investigation have declined to comment on the media. Nonetheless, this could be a sign that CTFC is keeping an eye out on big firms in the crypto market which might portray similarity with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
