MetaDAO has attracted significant attention and financial backing, securing substantial funding from venture capital firms and investors. MetaDAO has received considerable investments from prominent crypto VC Paradigm and 30 other contributors totalling $2.2M investment.

The investment was made by buying the META Tokem, the governance token of MetaDAO, which sums up to around 4,000 META Tokens.

What is “Futarchy” ?

Futarchy is a revolutionary concept within the DAO space, inspired by an economic theory proposed by economist Robin Hanson. According to Hanson's overview, Futarchy bases decisions on the outcomes of prediction markets rather than direct voting. The premise is that markets can more accurately forecast the success or failure of proposals, leading to superior decision-making.

MetaDAO’s implementation of Futarchy allows users to vote on proposals and simultaneously trade on their expected outcomes. This creates a dynamic and interactive governance model where market forces drive the decision-making process.

The benefits of Futarchy include improved prediction accuracy, incentivised participation, and a more resilient governance structure. However, it also has drawbacks, such as complexity and the necessity for a highly engaged community, as outlined in MetaDAO's documentation.

There are two main highlight points of these drawbacks, which are the Keynesian beauty contest and the zero-sum nature of a conditional market.

In financial markets, investors often engage in what is known as a Keynesian beauty contest, where they buy assets not because of their intrinsic value, but because they believe others will buy them. This behaviour was starkly evident during the GameStop short squeeze and is also prevalent in the crypto market.

One way to mitigate this issue in futarchy markets is to use whitelisted markets. In this approach, investors would need to demonstrate their history of trading based on fundamental analysis to qualify for participation.

Futarchy relies on conditional markets, which are inherently zero-sum. This means that for every gain made by one participant, there is an equivalent loss for another.

This characteristic can deter savvy investors from participating, as intelligent market participants generally avoid zero-sum games due to their limited potential for collective gain. As a result, liquidity and participation in futarchy markets may be constrained.

However, these problems can be addressed by providing incentives for trading or contributing liquidity could be effective. Since the futarchy model can generate positive externalities, such as better decision-making outcomes, these incentives can be justified and sustained over time

How Does the Voting and Trading Mechanism Work on MetaDAO?

The Futarchy mechanism has created a unique governance experience for MetaDAO users by utilising the Futarchy Protocol on Solana. Users can access the MetaDAO platform to vote on proposals and trade on their predicted outcomes.

The platform currently supports four DAOs within the Futarchy protocol: Futures DAO, Deans List, MetaDAO, and Drift. To participate in voting, users must hold the platform's governance token, the META Governance Token.

The process is straightforward: users select proposals to vote on and decide whether to go long or short on the proposal’s success.

If their vote aligns with the majority, they receive payouts, creating a direct financial incentive for accurate voting. This mechanism ensures that decision-making is driven by market dynamics and collective intelligence.

The platform will show what tokens are available to use to trade and vote on these proposals, whereas as an example, the “Approve Q3 Roadmap” Proposal can be traded with USDC but can be voted on using the META Governance Token.

Moreover, MetaDAO empowers users to launch their proposals or even their DAOs within the Futarchy protocol. This flexibility attracts developers, project owners, and traders who seek to create new trading proposals for profit or governance purposes.

To create a DAO, users only need to fill out a form that is available on the Futarchy Platform that can be accessed by clicking the “Create a Futarchy” Button.

Users need to fill in information about the DAO’s contact person, the DAO’s name, the address of the DAO Token (which is not mandatory so if the token does not have a DAO yet users can still create it), the Twitter Account of the DAO, the DAO’s Website, and the DAO’s Github page.

All of these will be used for consideration by the Futarchy Protocol, to eliminate the redundancy of having too many DAOs on the platform that are not being developed.

Overall, users can participate as they would in a normal governance platform, however, there is an added trading mechanism for the proposal and all of the governance process is done using the META Token in the MetaDAO Platform.

The META Governance Token

The META Governance Token is the cornerstone of the MetaDAO ecosystem. It is required for voting on proposals and participating in the governance process. Despite being relatively new, having launched in February 2024, the token has demonstrated significant potential.

According to CryptoRank and Coinmarketcap, the trading volume is currently around $100,000 a day, with an all-time high of $1,293 and an all-time low of $172.45. At the time of writing, the token is valued at $655, reflecting a rise of around 280% from its all-time low and a drop of nearly 50% from its peak.

The low trading volume is attributed to the token's early stage in its lifecycle. However, there is no telling whether the token’s value and transaction volume might increase as there is very little data yet to be analysed properly.
